The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology’s (ONC) work on health IT is authorized by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act.
HIPAA compliance is usually the reflex objection I get when proposing a mobile app for health care, but President Obama signed HITECH into law on Feb. 17, 2009, as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) economic stimulus bill.
HITECH offers new options for IT professionals interested in doing innovative healthcare tech projects. For example, Section 1561 of the Affordable Care Act includes recommendations for interoperable and secure standards and protocols that facilitate electronic enrollment of individuals in Federal and State health and human services programs.
